Hey! It’s Cärolyn here!
Cold weather brings dry, flaky skin that requires extra care. It’s essential to properly prepare your skin and choose the right products for your makeup base to ensure your look doesn’t end up looking crusty or dull by the end of the day. Now, here’s a particularly important point: in extremely low temperatures, avoid water-based facial creams, as they do not retain moisture but instead evaporate, which can lead to significant dryness, irritation, and even frostbite. If you struggle with flaking skin, I advise to gently exfoliate using enzyme scrubs to remove dead skin. Be gentle with your skin and steer clear of scrubs with harsh granules. For those experiencing inflammation or acne, protecting your skin barrier is crucial, so it’s best to avoid further irritation. Using barrier-repair creams is an excellent way to help with this. One of my personal favorites is the Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream.
Remember to allow your facial cream to absorb for a few minutes before applying foundation. Opt for a slightly richer moisturizer underneath your makeup, such as Toleriane Ultra Nuit by La Roche-Posay, Advanced Repair Cream by Eucerin, Lait-Crème Concentrée by Embryolisse, or Ultra Facial Cream by Kiehl’s.
The choice of foundation also plays a significant role in winter makeup. It’s important to select a foundation that provides hydration without feeling heavy or leaving an overly greasy shine on the skin. Some great lightweight yet covering foundations for winter include Nars Sheer Glow, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, and L’Oreal Paris True Match Nude Tinted Serum. If you prefer a foundation with more coverage and a matte finish, I recommend Estée Lauder Double Wear or IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream.
Since our skin is unique, the results with these products may vary for each individual. For those with textured skin, makeup may inevitably accentuate it, but this is not something to worry about—many people experience this. Nowadays, it’s easy to lose confidence over skin texture or acne, especially when everyone around us (on TikTok, Instagram) seems to have flawless, smooth skin. The reality is that filters are still very much in use and are heavily relied upon. So, don’t stress too much about it; experiment with different products to find what works best for your skin, and take good care of it!
However, if you still want to learn and practice all this, I’d love to see you at my “Everyday Makeup for Yourself” training, where we’ll focus individually on how your skin is suitable for makeup, how to choose products and how to find your shade, and how to create a look that highlights your natural beauty.
